What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is an oral appliance that contains the required number of artificial teeth, or pontics, between dental crowns at each end. These are cemented over healthy abutment teeth or specially placed dental implants on either side of the space in your smile to restore your mouth’s function and appearance after one or multiple consecutive teeth have been lost.
Dental bridges are usually made from resilient ceramic that can be customized to match the size, shape, and tone of your natural enamel for beautiful results that blend in seamlessly. Not only that, but the material is durable enough to resist chips, cracks, and stains and can potentially last for 5 to 15+ years with proper care.
Types of Dental Bridges

Before proceeding with this service, you must consult Dr. Puskas to determine whether you’re a good candidate. Once our team examines your current dental condition, we can devise a customized treatment plan based on our findings. Then, there are two types of dental bridges we might recommend, outlined in more detail below.
Traditional Dental Bridge

This is the standard option and is often used to replace one to four missing teeth in a row. It’s anchored to healthy abutment teeth on each side of the space in your smile, which must have sufficient healthy enamel to support it. Those with more severe damage or decay might do better with an implant bridge.
Implant Bridge

This functions similarly to a traditional dental bridge, except instead of being attached to natural teeth in your mouth, it’s connected to specially placed dental implants. This involves surgically positioning two support rods into your jaw, which fuse with the bone as you recover, making them a more permanent part of your mouth. Once you’ve healed sufficiently, Dr. Puskas can provide a lifelike prosthetic that connects to these posts to close the gap in your grin.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge

There are several advantages of choosing to rebuild your smile with a one-of-a-kind dental bridge, including:
- Look your best. The materials can be customized to match your natural enamel for beautiful results that boost your confidence in your appearance.
- Improved bite force. This treatment returns a portion of your original chewing power so you can enjoy a variety of wholesome foods.
- Enhanced enunciation. Closing the spaces in your arch can help you overcome changes to your speech patterns caused by missing teeth.
- Preserve your dental health. Your restoration helps ensure your remaining teeth stay in their proper positions rather than drifting out of alignment, preventing damage and decay.
- Durable materials. The ceramic that comprises your new teeth resists damage and discoloration and can last a decade or longer when cared for properly.
