What Are Implant Dentures?

Your jaw starts to thin after tooth loss without roots to stimulate additional bone growth, causing dentures that once fit like a glove to feel loose or easily become dislodged. Getting implant dentures involves surgically placing 4 to 8 support rods into your jaw, which eventually fuse with the bone. They function like roots and help keep your jawbone active and healthy after completing this stage of recovery.
Once you’ve healed sufficiently, Dr. Puskas can provide a lifelike set of dentures that are specially designed to anchor to your implants, reducing the likelihood of destabilization or dislodgment. Depending on your unique circumstances, she might recommend one of the following options:
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures, sometimes referred to as a hybrid prosthesis, are anchored to the supports and aren’t intended to be removed and reinserted on a daily basis. These more permanent restorations are only meant to be removed by a professional, like Dr. Puskas.
Removable Implant Dentures

Sometimes called ‘Snap-On Dentures’, these replacement teeth are secured to your implants using clips (bar-retained) or ball sockets (ball-retained), so that patients can remove them. They’re more securely attached than traditional dentures, though they are also meant to be taken out morning and night for regular cleanings.
The Implant Dentures Process

Although it might vary based on your unique circumstances, typically, getting dental implants involves the following steps:
- Our team will update your medical history, examine your mouth, and measure your jawbone density to help determine whether you’re a good candidate for surgery.
- Dr. Puskas works with local specialists to enhance the accuracy of implant placement and improve the probability of success. You’ll be numbed and/or sedated for the procedure, which involves making incisions in your connective tissues to strategically position the necessary number of support rods.
- It can take several months to recover after surgery as your mouth generates sufficient new bone growth in the jaw to fuse with the dental implants so they’re firmly rooted. Once your mouth has healed, our team will make impressions, which will be sent to a dental laboratory to design your new dentures.
- Placing the abutment. You’ll have another, more minor procedure to place the connectors that attach your restoration to your implants.
- Final fitting. Our team will schedule you for a final fitting after receiving your completed dentures from the laboratory and anchor them in place before sending you home with a beautifully rebuilt smile.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Many experts consider dental implants the gold standard for replacing missing teeth, but that doesn’t mean they’re the right treatment to meet everyone’s unique needs. You might be considered a good candidate if you have demonstrated a commitment to positive dental hygiene habits, have good general health to safely undergo surgery, and have sufficient jawbone density to support your new teeth.
Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

There are several excellent reasons to consider getting implant dentures in Atlanta, including:
- Boost your confidence. Puskas can provide a lifelike set of dentures made from completely customizable materials, so you look and feel like the most beautiful, self-assured version of yourself.
- Preserve your jawbone. Dental implants are the only restorations that have support rods to function like natural roots, helping to maintain your jawbone strength and prevent degeneration following tooth loss.
- Enjoy more reliable results. Your replacement teeth are firmly anchored and, therefore, are less likely to become destabilized or dislodged during a meal or conversation.
- High probability of success. The procedure has an incredibly high success rate of over 90%, meaning most patients won’t develop complications if they follow the provided post-operative instructions.
- Long-lasting solution. Dental implants essentially become a permanent part of your mouth and can last 25+ years if cared for correctly.
