What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is essentially a small cap that fits over a damaged tooth. Once placed by a dentist, it prevents further harm to the treated area and reduces your risk of oral issues. The cap also blends seamlessly with your smile due to its all-ceramic material.

Due to the above qualities, ideal candidates for dental crowns have one (or more) of the following:

  • Large & Failing Dental Fillings
  • Highly Fractured or Decayed Teeth
  • Bite Problems That Need Correction
  • A Tooth Treated with Root Canal Therapy
  • An Existing-yet-Damaged Dental Crown

The Dental Crown Process

It only takes two dental visits to receive a standard dental crown. For the first visit, our team prepares the affected tooth for its cap. We place the actual restoration during the second appointment, which is held several weeks later.

Dr. Puskas will take several key steps for the preparatory visit. For starters, she’ll numb your mouth with an anesthetic that ensures her “prep work” doesn’t cause pain. She’ll then remove any old fillings in the treatment site and (if necessary) rebuild your tooth’s missing structure. Only after these moves will she shave off some enamel, ensuring your tooth has room for its crown. Dr. Puskas will take an impression of the prepped tooth afterward, as it allows workers to craft your restoration.

You’ll undergo the second session two to three weeks later. At that time, Dr. Puskas and her team will carefully place your dental crown and ensure it fits well. (This process goes quickly; we’ll just confirm your restoration “blends” as it should.) We’ll then cement the crown, polish it, and send you off to enjoy your restored smile.

If you’d like to skip the above, you should get one of our CEREC crowns. Dr. Puskas can create these other kinds in-office with only an hour of work.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

With a dental crown from Dr. Puskas, you’ll enjoy perks like:

  • A Stronger Smile – Thanks to their durable ceramic, our dental crowns can protect your teeth and withstand your bite. They’ll thus help you avoid the need for root canals or tooth extractions.
  • Seamless Looks – Because they’re tooth-colored, dental crowns “blend in” seamlessly with the rest of your grin. They won’t stand out oddly or draw unwanted attention.
  • Versatile Care – A dental crown covers the visible surface of a tooth, so it can treat cavities, chips, cracks, and more.
  • Long-Lasting Results – Today’s dental crowns last an average of 5-15 years, while well-maintained ones can work for 30 years or more.
